Retail Lead (Community Hub)

Location: Chester-Le-Street, County Durham.

Salary: £10.50 ph

Hours: 22.5 hrs (Covering Thursday to Saturday- weekend rota 3 on 1 off - Flexible)

If you are looking to join an exciting project which helps all the community within the areas surrounding Chester-Le-Street, we are looking for a proactive and self-motivated Retail Lead to drive our retail sales to create income for our branch and oversee a team of retail volunteers.

The project which is our first Community Hub will be based in Chester-Le-Street and will cover the following areas to help our communities:- retail, online selling, food bank, donation station, welfare and advice, warm room, events room and much more.

In this role, you will work closely with the Community Liaison Officer (CLO); you will be responsible for all aspects of the retail department for the Branch and the smooth daily operation of the processes in compliance with current legislation, H&S, GDPR, Branch and RSPCA Society policies.

Essential Duties

  • Raise funds through your retail shop to help continue the welfare work we do for animals.
  • To be a responsible key holder, opening & closing the premises for trading hours, ensuring that the hours are strictly adhered to.
  • To maximise retail sales, control direct retail expenditure in line with annual budgetary provisions.
  • To maximise and secure new donations for the branch via local businesses and the community.
  • Develop and implement a system to maximise gift aid income from donated goods
  • To ensure the window displays and merchandising of the shop layout are appealing to the customers at all times. Using fresh and innovative ideas.
  • To accept and process all donations in accordance with relevant policies and procedures.
  • To ensure effective stock control procedures are in place: to monitor stock levels and undertake regular stock checks. (including any new goods)
  • To ensure minimum losses of both stock and cash adhering to the bank and till procedures and safeguarding the property of the Branch at all times.
  • To ensure rotation and replenishment of stock to the retail area, are carried out in accordance with relevant policies and procedures.
  • To price all items in accordance with the agreed pricing structures.
  • Ensure all donations are used to their full potential before recycling/ragging.
  • To organise the promotion, displays, and/or events for the retail department.
  • Be able to fully utilise the till/epos, tagging, and pricing system.
  • Achieve and maintain high standards of housekeeping, organisation, and cleanliness throughout the Community Hub.
  • Work with employees, volunteers, and customers to resolve conflicts by following the relevant branch procedures for complaints
  • Build sustainable relationships within the Community at all levels and represent the RSPCA Branch at key events and activities where applicable.
  • Achieve and maintain high standards of housekeeping, organisation, and cleanliness throughout the Community Hub
  • Be an active, participative, and supportive member of the Team to ensure that all aspects of the Branch strategy are successfully delivered.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

  • You will have a passion for animal welfare and desire to be an ambassador of the RSPCA Branch.
  • GCSE(or equivalent) in English and Maths.
  • Minimum of 1 years experience in Retail and/or Charity Retail
  • Minimum of 1 years experience of Customer Service.

The ideal candidate will possess the following:

  • Enthusiasm and passion for RSPCA work and love animals
  • Charity and/or retail experience, with commercial awareness
  • Managing gift aid system for donated goods
  • Understanding of retail law
  • Demonstrate excellent IT skills
  • A people focused person able to evidence interest and engagement with the local community
  • Good written and numeric skills are desirable.
  • Experience in recruiting and working with groups of volunteers
  • Experience in managing budgets and accounts
  • Experience in cash handling and financial management procedures (including completion of sales records)

Desirable skills and experience:

  • Understanding of charity law
  • Able to demonstrate strong planning, guiding and motivation skills to successfully achieve targeted income is desirable.
  • Willingness to learn new skills through training and development.
  • Full valid UK Driving Licence
